TRIANGLE, the introductory three song suite from Spalding’s forthcoming album (entitled available at SongwrightsApothecaryLab.com), is a yearlong manifestation of her work that begins to answer these questions. Each meditative track was designed with a unique affect in mind. “Music is a very powerful medium—it’s profound, it’s deep, it penetrates the psyche,” explains Spalding. “We know a good score to the scene of the movie completely changes how the scenes feels. I was craving something that I thought would help me in a situation and weaving in strands [of knowledge] that emerged from the research.” To counter stress with some sonic self-soothing, there’s Formwela 1, while Formwela 2, featuring South Indian vocalist Ganavya Doraiswamy, is formulated to fill the room with vibrations that “de-escalate interpersonal aggression.” Finally, Formwela 3 offers support for the listeners’ personal re-grounding process after experiencing upset. The emotive production that complements Spalding’s poetic lyrics, soulful vocals, and nimble bass plucking comes courtesy of R&B and soul force Raphael Saadiq, jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter, and singer, rapper, and multi-instrumentalist Phoelix.
After percolating in Spalding’s mind for a couple of years, The Songwrights Apothecary Lab was set in motion in February of last year—a month before the global pandemic would catalyze a seismic shift in our culture. “Since the pandemic happened in the middle of convening this council I’d started curating and inviting, there was already this focal point for me and my collaborators and fellow artists,” explains Spalding, who began hosting a retreat in Portland with other artists of color during the first stage of lockdown. “We were oriented toward this question of, ‘How do we respond? How do we show up and offer our goods?'”When Esperanza Spalding first embarked on The Songwrights Apothecary Lab, a new project exploring how musicians can apply music therapy to their art, she had no idea just how urgent it would become to our collective healing and community rebuilding.
With the past year’s global movement around the Black Lives Matter movement, and the increased emphasis on self-care as a vital tool for healing, Spalding’s TRIANGLE is truly medicine for the times. “We’re in a space in our world where we’re navigating the impact of the pandemic, anti-Black violence, civil unrest, and all those different elements,” explains Marisol Norris, director of music therapy at Drexel University, founder of the Black Music Therapy Network, and member of The Songwrights Apothecary Lab council. “This kind of work is linked to questions of how do you hold some of the tensions of experiences, and then also have this kind of radical hope within like the act of making music really amplifies that possibility? The creation and expression that’s inherently part of the process teaches us how to be in community with one another.”
